More and more people know to apply sunscreen every day. However, it is not foolproof to apply sunscreen, it is necessary to apply enough. A study by King's College, University of London, shows that people often apply too little sunscreen to provide the protection claimed by manufacturers.
Researchers asked volunteers to apply sunscreen of varying thicknesses, applying 0.75 mg to 2 mg per square centimeter. 2 milligrams per square centimeter is the thickness of the sunscreen manufacturer to test the function of the product, and it is also the recommended thickness. The researchers then tested the skin for damage to the DNA of volunteers. The results showed that 2 mg of sunscreen was applied per square centimeter. Volunteers were continuously exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation for 5 days. The skin suffered less damage than sunscreen that was not directly exposed for 1 day. If the thickness of the sunscreen is less than 2 milligrams per square centimeter, the protection is greatly reduced. For example, when applied at a thickness of 0.75 milligrams per square centimeter, the protective effect is only 40% of the original (based on previous research, people usually apply sunscreen at a thickness of 0.8 milligrams per square centimeter).
The findings are published in the latest issue of the Journal of Dermatology and Venereology. Research author Anthony Young said sunscreens play an important role in protecting the skin. This research shows that the way sunscreen is applied is crucial to sunscreen effectiveness. Since people apply sunscreens as much as the thickness tested by the manufacturer, it is recommended that people use products with a higher sun protection index.
Nina Gold, British Dermatologist Association, said: "This study tells us why it is so important to choose a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. In theory, SPF15 should be sufficient, but we know that in real life everyone A higher SPF is needed to provide additional protection. "She said that people may be applying too little sunscreen, uneven or missing a piece of skin, so it is best to put on sun protection clothing, a hat or cover the sun.
